How to handle a candle - a guide
Trim the wick properly
If your candle has a decorative twisted wick, remember to trim it down to 1cm before lighting for the first time - in the case of a cotton wick; if it is a candle with a wooden wick, it should always be cut to 5mm.
It's also important to trim the wick of the candle you plan to relight. Regular trimming will prevent the candle from burning faster, the surface from burning unevenly, or overheating.
For this you can use-
- A special wick trimmer
- Scissors
- your own fingers
Never leave residue from the cut wick in the candle! Such impurities can affect the later appearance of the candle. It will darken and the residue itself (from the cut wick or match) may be flammable!
The first burning of the candle
If you want to enjoy your beautiful candle for a long time, which burns evenly in the vessel and develops its full fragrance function, you should remember to burn it properly - I'll explain how:
When you light the candle for the first time, let it burn for at least 2-3 hours / or until you notice that the entire surface of the candle has melted evenly to the rim of the vessel - then you can already extinguish the candle. However, you should make sure that the next burning times are of a similar length as before or that the candle burns until the surface has completely melted. Otherwise your candle may burn unevenly and form a "tunnel". The candle has a "memory effect" and then burns that way every time, ie it goes further down and forms an unsightly tunnel.
At the same time, you should not let the candle burn for more than 4 hours, because after such a long burning time the scent can evaporate faster and the glass can burst from overheating.
Also remember never to light your candle straight out of the box, especially when it's colder outside, as the cold glass may shatter from the heating of the burning wick. So leave your new candle in a warm room for at least 6 hours after unpacking it for the first time, especially during colder times of the year. And in warmer weather you should try to collect the package as soon as possible, especially if there is no shaded area where she is left.
What to do if the candle burns unevenly:
Sometimes our candle does not burn evenly and tends to "tunnel". This may be the result of moving the candle frequently while it is burning, or the wax not having had time to solidify after extinguishing, or placing the candle on an uneven surface or burning out in a draft. There can be many reasons for this. It is therefore essential to follow the "candle care" instructions that are always included with your order in order to avoid the risk of uneven burning.
And what to do if it has already happened?
- The easiest way is to take food-safe aluminum foil, which we almost always have in our kitchen supplies, wrap it around the glass of the burning candle and wait until the entire vessel has heated up enough that the wax begins to drip off the walls and an even flow surface is created.
Final Burn
One of the most painful moments for you as a candle lover is when you have to let go of your candle when there is only 1.5 cm of wax left. For your own safety, it is best to stop burning right now, as the bottom of the jar will become very hot and there is a risk of the candle shattering.
What can we do if we don't want to part with our favorite candle just yet?
You can heat water in a pot and put the candle in the pot and wait until the wax is completely liquid. Then pour the wax into a silicone mold (eg an unused ice cube tray) and wait a few hours until it has completely hardened - then you can reuse it eg in a wax melt warmer.
or Pour warm water from the cauldron over the candle and wait until the wax separates from the bottom and forms a hard layer on top. Then remove the candle with tongs, dry it and place it in a wax melt warmer.
Or we can just light a new favorite candle.
Extinguish candles
For some, extinguishing the candle is the most beautiful moment, since the scent is then most intense, for others it is one of the worst moments when burning the candle, since blowing it out leads to increased smoke development. It can also damage the wick so it won't burn evenly next time, and there is a risk of fire if the smoke from previously extinguished candles is already in the air. Blowing it out can also contaminate our wax.
So how do you put out the candle?
You can get a special candle snuffer that you can use to cover the burning wick to cut off the air flow, allowing the wick to extinguish itself without any smoke rising.
Cleaning the wax melt warmer
You may wish to clean the wax warmer of old wax so that you can use it again with our waxes. We will explain you how to do that:
- Light a tea light and wait for the wax to gently melt - you will notice that you can gently move it around the bowl with a toothpick, for example.
- Remove the tealight with a toothpick, straight onto a paper towel.
- Extinguish the tea light.
- Clean the warmer with a paper towel.
And voila! You can now place our wax in the ceramic fragrance lamp
Frosting - a natural effect
Sometimes you'll notice a frosting on the surface of the candle, which can give the impression that the candle is frozen, but that's not the case!
If you notice such an effect on your candle, it is called "frosting".
And it indicates that the candle is made entirely from natural vegetable wax (ie like all candles in our store).
The deposit often forms even if you don't use your candle for a while, but it doesn't affect the burning of the candle in any way.
When is the right moment to light my decorative candle?
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and although our candles are made with the utmost care and from the finest materials available, there comes a time when our candle, sitting in its perfect place in your home, becomes less noticeable or their colors begin to fade. This is the right moment to say goodbye and finally feel its intense aroma from within, and at the same time it's a good moment to replace it with one of our other candles.
Protect surfaces
It's always a good idea to protect the surfaces you place your candles on. You might want to invest in a candle mat so the surface doesn't get dirty or damaged if wax is spilled.
For cupcake candles, which mainly have a decorative function, you also need a candle coaster, because the candles start to soften slightly on very hot days. This is easily noticeable - when you take the candle in your hand, a wet spot remains on your fingers, which can also be seen on the surface on which the candle stands.
Attention: If the candle is exposed to sunlight for a long time, its colors may fade.
Security
- Do not leave the candle unattended while it is burning. Do not leave a burning candle burning in another room where you are not present.
- Do not place candles near combustible materials.
- Do not place several candles next to each other, their minimum distance should be 10 cm.
- Do not leave the candle burning when you leave the house or go to bed.
- After lighting, place the candle out of the reach of children and animals.
- Do not light the candle in a draft or an open window.
- Do not move a candle that has been lit or has just been extinguished without allowing it to cool.
- Remember to air the room after you extinguish the candles
- Do not light a damaged candle in a broken vessel.
